Password on GSN

My television cable company has added the Game Show Network (GSN). This isn’t very interesting, but it is diverting. It turns out GSN is actually helpful for short breaks during the day. Ten minutes of an old game show, and a few new ones, can help clear a cluttered mind. Remember "Match Game?" Yep, still [...]

Who’s the Greatest…

…Male Movie Dancer of Them All?

Parade magazine is running a poll: Who’s the best (male) movie dancer of them all…Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly. Vote here. (I already voted; my choice in the extended entry.)

Maybe they should run a second poll for the greatest female movie dancer…Eleanor Powell or Ann Miller?

Uh…Do I Know You?

Last night I went to see my niece in a school musical. As I was walking into the school with my family, a woman looked at me and said, "I know you, don’t I?" I agreed she looked familar, but we couldn’t place each other. We exchanged names, discussed where we’d grown up, discussed jobs, [...]

Jimmy Stewart: A Hollywood Legend

The U.S. Postal System has announced that Jimmy Stewart will be the 13th honoree in their Legends of Hollywood stamp series. Jimmy Stewart is without a doubt one of my favorite actors and Americans. The July stamp will have a dedication ceremony in Hollywood.

I’ll be buying some!

UPDATE: When I first posted, they didn’t have images [...]

Excuse Me, Your Majesty

Why is it that the movie The Queen is playing in such a limited release? It’s received rave reviews and I’d like to see it…but it is not playing anywhere near me and hasn’t been for over three weeks. I don’t know how accurate the movie is, but it looks interesting, has already won some [...]

Little Bit o’ Light for Lilabet

Nineteen years ago when I was in Europe, some friends and I went to see Big Ben* all lit up at night. It was spectacular! I still remember coming up from the tube and just stopping at the breathtaking sight of Big Ben illuminated. Unfortunately, most of my pictures were damaged by a smudge on [...]

A Meme, A Meme; I’m Finally Doing a Meme!

From Kazza:

DO YOU SNORE? No, but sometimes during the allergy season I make a slight rasping noise in the early morning as the sinuses are ready for a stirring.
ARE YOU A LOVER OR A FIGHTER? Depends on the situation, but maybe others should answer this for me.
WHAT’S YOUR WORST FEAR? Something bad happening to my [...]

Morton Arboretum 2

I’m so glad I was able to visit Morton Arboretum yesterday; even if it was for less than an hour! And what an improvement over the weather only eight days ago! It was so pretty I’d like to visit a few more times in the next weeks. Maybe I can convince my co-workers that we [...]

Spazzing

I had my first ever back spasm on Wednesday. I’ve heard plenty of other people describe how painful and debilitating these spasms are and I’ve always believed them. This was the first–and only, I hope–time I got to personally confirm their reports. I haven’t had any other back spasms since then, but my back has [...]

Autumn Eyes

An entry called "Autumn Eyes" ought to be about taking pictures of the beautiful autumn colors we are experiencing (sort of*). Instead, it’s to whine that my eyes are still bothering me! As I posted here, I’m suffering allergy pink eye. It got better, oddly during my awful cold, but came back and last week, [...]

Animal Kingdom

Reggie and I stopped by my parent’s house for a quick visit this afternoon. Annoyingly, I was there longer than Reggie.

There’s a small cherry blossom tree out in front of my parent’s house that we hook Reggie to. Reggie loves this. He talks to all the people going to and from the elementary school, [...]

It’s Official

Yes, it’s truly official now: yesterday’s snow was the earliest measurable snowfall in Chicago history! Never has snow accumulated enough to measure as early in the year as October 12. This was really not a record we wanted to set, but at least it was reasonably painless and rather pretty to boot.

And poor western New [...]

Here Kitty-Kitty

I went to a hardware store tonight and overheard a man ask an employee:

"Do you have something like a mousetrap?"

OK, I give. What could possible be "like a mousetrap?"

Was he hoping the hardware store had cats? Or maybe he wanted a synthetic or imitation mousetrap? Was he looking for a pseudo mousetrap because he wants [...]

Snowy Wake Up Call

The forecasts were right. It snowed today. It wasn’t a lot of snow, but it was too much for October 12! The temperature is in the 30s–ick. Here’s another shot:

Don’t laugh! This is what my uncle in Houston would call a blizzard! LOL.

Tomorrow is NOT Halloween!

As I reported here last year, we always, always, always have wretched weather on Halloween in Chicagoland. Let’s face it, we don’t have the greatest weather most of the year: cold-rainy springs, hot-humid summers (and this year it was rainy too), nippy-icy winters, but autumn…we usually have nice autumns. We call them Indian Summers as [...]

A Thief in the Light

A friend’s house was robbed while she was at work yesterday. A neighbor saw kids loitering around the neighborhood, but didn’t call the police in case it seemed racists–wrong choice. (I don’t know what race the neighbor is or the race of the kids she saw.) But the neighbor described some of the clothes the [...]
