ABC re-ran last season’s final episode of LOST tonight. I was working and I only watched a few minutes of it, but that was sufficient for a big belly laugh!
They decided to include fake Closed Captioning on the bottom of the screen…actually, they were more like those pop-up bubbles containing trivia, tidbits, and such, but theses only appeared at the bottom of the screen and were without sound effects. It started out by informing us that the character on the screen was Jack*. Jack in the future. Jack, they blurb us, is clearly upset (doesn’t this imply horrible acting if they have to tell us the character is upset?). Jack does not appear to be disturbed by the bumpy ride (reference to Bette Davis there). Jack is drinking more than normal. Etc., etc., etc.
Tonight’s episode, the continued CC informed us, was about mirror images. Here was the barrel laugh:
"Look at how distressed and distraught Jack is! This is a mirror image of the Jack we’ve come to know and love on the island*." (I’m paraphrasing a bit.)
Excuse me? Love Jack? I don’t think so. Trust me: no love lost there!
*And secondly, if they had to tell us who character was Jack…how can they minutes later say we know him? Either we don’t know who his or we do…hello?
One last thing…isn’t there a writers’ strike going on right now? Who wrote these CC blurbs? Hmm? (All this from less than 10 minutes of viewing…oops.)
