Leap Day

Several Leap Years ago my mother was an el-ed teacher and had a student whose mother was born on Leap Day. That particular year, the child was older than her mother. I think the child was 10 and the mother was "9."

To celebrate the mother’s birthday and Leap Day, they had a birthday party for her in the classroom. It was probably an excellent learning event for the kids as they studied the rules and exceptions and exceptions to exceptions all dealing with Leap Year. The mother explained that it was odd having a birth date that only appeared once every four years. But, she told the students, the advantage of having February 29 as a birthday was choosing a replacement celebration day. Every year she got to choose what day she wanted to celebrate her birthday…now that’s pretty cool, especially for kids.

I leapt into the future today by spending part of it at a retirement center visiting two elderly (in age, not spirit) friends. It was fun…they are both such firecrackers. I hope I have a fraction of their energy at that age.
